About METAR Master
METAR Master helps pilots practice decoding real METAR and TAF weather reports. The app pulls live data from aviationweather.gov and provides detailed, field-by-field decoded explanations to help you build fluency — whether you're a student pilot preparing for your written exam or an experienced aviator sharpening your skills.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use the app?
- Select a practice mode (METAR, TAF, or Both) on the home screen
- Read the raw weather report and try to decode it in your head
- Tap Reveal Decode to see the full decoded breakdown
- Mark whether you decoded it correctly with Got It or Missed It
- Tap Next Report to continue practicing
Does the app work offline?
Yes. METAR Master includes bundled weather data so you can practice without an internet connection. When connected, the app downloads fresh reports from aviationweather.gov for up-to-date practice.
What weather report elements are decoded?
The app decodes all standard METAR and TAF fields including:
- → Wind (direction, speed, gusts, variable)
- → Visibility (statute miles, fractional, RVR)
- → Sky conditions (coverage, ceiling, cloud types)
- → Weather phenomena (rain, snow, fog, thunderstorms, freezing precipitation, etc.)
- → Temperature and dewpoint with spread analysis
- → Altimeter setting
- → TAF change groups (FM, TEMPO, BECMG, PROB)
- → 25+ remark codes (SLP, precise temperature, pressure tendency, peak wind, ice accretion, and more)
How does the pilot rank system work?
Your rank progresses based on the number of reports you attempt and your accuracy:
What stations does the app use?
The app pulls reports from 48 diverse US airports including major hubs, mountain stations, Gulf Coast, Midwest, Alaska, and Hawaii to give you a wide variety of weather conditions.
The app shows "Unable to Load Report"
This can happen if:
- → You don't have an internet connection (try offline mode with bundled data)
- → The aviationweather.gov service is temporarily down
Tap Try Again to retry, or continue practicing with the bundled offline data.
What are the system requirements?
- → iOS 17.0 or later
- → iPhone and iPad (Universal)
- → No internet connection required for offline practice
